BEAUTY KNOWLEDGE I'M IMPARTING ON MY BIRTHDAY
So I am officially another year older.
In the midst of trying not to get an anxiety attack because of my age, and packing to move across the world again, I decided - what better way to celebrate my impending doom (I kid), than to impart some beauty knowledge.
1. There is no cream for dark eye circles. Stop spending your money on them. There ARE creams that will help fine lines, and I recommend Dermalogica's Age Reversal Eye Complex but dark circles? It is hereditary, and there's basically no cure for it. I should know. What you should do is go to a dermatologist (If you're in Singapore, I recommend Dr. Komathy of The Lifestyle Clinic. She specializes in darker skin and she's bomb. Tell her I sent ya.) and peel the living daylights out of those circles once every few years. There is nothing as freeing as the confidence not to have to dab concealer before you leave home.
2. Don't forget your sunscreen. I don't care if it's cloudy out, or it's 44°C. Going without it means you're exposing your skin to the harmful rays of the sun, which ages your skin faster. Instead of trying to find solutions to your sun spots, prevent them from happening!
3. Your skin is what you eat. Not gonna lie. I have lived in LA long enough to, ahem, be lactose, and gluten intolerant and I down a cocktail of supplements for my skin, and general health. There’s no pill that can compensate for a poor diet or a chronic lack of sleep—but a proven, high-quality supplement can potentially act as a good safety net to a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. If you're wanting to hop on the supplement program, start with these:
Idebenone - Initially developed for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and other cognitive defects, Idebenone is an antioxidant that is small enough to penetrate deep into skin to repair damaged cells.
CoQ10 - CoQ10 is an extremely powerful antioxidant that otherworldly benefits for literally everyone. It has virtually endless applications and qualities. It has anti-aging properties, increases energy and can lead to improved cardiovascular and cellular health.
Alpha-Lipoic Acid - Alpha-Lipoic Acid can be found in every cell of your body, but like CoQ10, the amount your body produces decreases naturally with age. It’s a potent, versatile, antioxidant warrior that helps beat down inflammation, balance those blood-sugar raiders and protect your skin collagen battlements. It boosts the effectiveness of other antioxidants in your body, promotes nerve health, maintains healthy skin, helps remove heavy metals from the body and purifies the liver. ALA is not your side chick, she's your ride-or-die chick.
Collagen - I add two tablespoon of this to my smoothies or matcha in the morning. You lose 1% of collagen every year after you turn 30. Yes, some studies say that the collagen you consume don't get absorbed into your skin, but if it doesn't, at least it gets to my joints, no?
4. Get facials. There are people who are lucky enough to have them often, and in all honesty, I get them once every quarter because I think I take care of my skin pretty well to begin with. There is something, however, incredibly luxurious about having someone else apply a mask on your skin with a brush. Also, I have a new addiction to microcurrent facials. So good.
